Turmeric Latte

Cosy and warming, this caffeine-free hot drink is full of aromatic flavours. In India golden milk is drunk a bedtime and enjoyed as a way of nourishing way to boost immunity. This vegan version is made with fresh turmeric and ginger, as well as cardamom, cinnamon and a dash of agave. Comforting and delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1cm piece of ginger
  • 2cm piece of turmeric
  • 3 cardamom pods
  • A pinch of crushed pepper
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp agave syrup
  • 300ml almond drink
  • A pinch of ground cinnamon

Method

1. Peel and grate the ginger and turmeric into a pan. Crush the cardamom pods to open them. Shake the black seeds out of the green papery husks into the pan. Add a pinch of black pepper.
2. Add the coconut oil, agave syrup and almond milk to the pan. Set over a low heat and warm for 3-5 mins, whisking constantly, till the milk heats through and is foamy.
3. Taste the latte and add a dash more agave syrup, if you think it needs it. Pour it into a large cup through a sieve. Sprinkle with a pinch of cinnamon to serve.

This is a really lovely unusual hot drink and such a cheery colour too. I only used 1 tsp of coconut oil the second time I made it as 2 was a bit too rich for me. I also didn't peel the turmeric and ginger without it affecting the end result (plus saves getting yellow fingers!). Delicious and you know it's doing you good too.
