Grow your own winter squash with these organic Red Kuri Squash Seeds from our friends at Vital Seeds. Often called “Red Onion” or “Hokkaido” squash, this variety has deep orange red skin, complemented by golden flesh. Easy to grow, the squashes are firm but smooth with a sweet and nutty flavour that make a deliciously different alternative to butternut squash in tray bakes, soups and risottos.

Sow in pots indoors from April and plant out in May for harvest from August to October. Add manure or compost to ensure they grow well.

These heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, meaning you can harvest the seeds to place again the following year.

Pack contains approximately 12 seeds.

Producer

Vital Seeds is a small independent seed company based in Devon producing and selling organic and open-pollinated seeds. Unlike hybrid varieties it is possible to save seed from these varieties year after and they can adapt to your local climate and soil conditions over time. Vital Seeds are committed to educating gardeners and growers about how to save their own seed in the hope of creating a more resilient food system.

Storage & prep

When to sow: April – June

Spacing: 1.5 x 1.5m

Winter squash tips: Sow in pots indoors from April and plant out in May; or sow direct in May. Squashes are very cold sensitive, so cover the plants with fleece if there is a danger of frost.

Squashes are hungry and benefit from a good dose of manure or compost added to the soil before planting. They also do well planted straight into the compost heap!
