Make a beautiful addition to your veg patch with these organic Scarlet Emperor Runner Bean Seeds from Vital Seeds. A vigorous, heritage variety, the plants have bright red flowers and grow up to 3m tall, producing masses of smooth, long green pods that can be eaten as a snap bean. The pods can also be matured to use as a drying bean and form seeds of a purple colour with black dapples.

Direct sow from May to the beginning of June when the soil has warmed up, and harvest from July all the way through to October. Build a climbing frame prior to sowing to avoid damaging the roots of the runner beans.

These heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, meaning you can harvest the seeds to place again the following year.

Storage & prep

When to sow: May – June

Spacing: 65 x 40cm

Runner Beans tips: Direct sow from May until the beginning of June, when the soil has warmed up. If sown when the soil is too cold and/or wet the beans may rot. We recommend building the climbing structure first (poles distanced 65cm between rows and 40cm within the row) and then planting four beans at the base of each pole 4cm deep. This way you will know exactly where the beans have been planted and also you will not damage the roots when building the structure.
