- Hardy, easy-to-grow Perpetual Spinach which is actually part of the chard family and an excellent “cut-and-come-again” leaf.

- Italian staple, Nero di Toscana Kale, which sports dark green, quilted leaves that grow upright.

- Delicate Five-colour Chard with a mix of pink, red, yellow, orange and white stalks, ready to harvest (in baby form) in six weeks.

- Aromatic Giant Winter Spinach, which, as the name suggests, is particularly well suited for autumn and winter cultivation.

Producer

Vital Seeds is a small independent seed company based in Devon producing and selling organic and open-pollinated seeds. Unlike hybrid varieties it is possible to save seed from these varieties year after and they can adapt to your local climate and soil conditions over time. Vital Seeds are committed to educating gardeners and growers about how to save their own seed in the hope of creating a more resilient food system.

Storage & prep

Perpetual Spinach:
When to sow: Feb – Aug
Spacing: 25 x 25 cm
Tips: Direct sow in shallow drills of 1.5cm depth. When plants are 15cm high, thin to appropriate spacing.
Early sowings can be made in modules starting in February and then transplanted outside 4-5 weeks later to crop May onwards. Sowing after midsummer will provide you with leaves from autumn until the following spring.

Kale:
When to sow: March – July
Spacing: 50 x 50cm
Tips: Sow from April in modules/pots and transplant after 4-5 weeks. Make sure to plant right up to the first true leaves and ‘firm-in’ in well when planting, as they will not be happy in loose soil.
Alternatively direct sow outdoors from May in drills 50cm apart and thin to final spacing. Thinnings are a delicious addition to salad.

Chard:
When to sow: Feb – Aug
Spacing: 25 x 25cm
Tips: Direct sow in shallow drills of 1.5cm depth. When plants are 15cm high, thin to appropriate spacing.

Spinach:
When to sow: March – Sept
Spacing: 30 x 15cm
Tips: For summer varieties of spinach sow in late spring, and protect with fleece if there is danger of frost. For winter varieties sow at the end of the summer.
Sow in situ in drills 30cm apart, and thin to 15cm between plants. Alternatively sow in modules and transplant to final spacing.
