"My dad Mark's mulled wine is iconic in our household. It's an old family recipe that goes back to his father, and potentially beyond him. We serve it in copper mulled wine glasses to guests when they arrive on Christmas Day. I always make the starter, so I have very fond memories of preparing it all with a warm glass!" Ingredients

  • 11/2 ltrs red wine, such as merlot
  • 250ml port
  • 250ml orange juice
  • 4 tbsp Demerara sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 bay leaves
  • A thumb of ginger
  • 2 clementines
  • 1 lemon

Method

1. Pour the wine, port and orange juice into a large, heavy-based pan. Sprinkle in the sugar. Drop in the cinnamon stick and bay leaves. Thinly slice the thumb of ginger (no need to peel it), clementines and lemon then add to the pan.
2. Place the pan on a low heat and bring up to a simmer. Pop on a lid and continue to gently heat for 10 mins, stirring occasionally - take care not to boil the pan.
3. Taste and add more sugar if you like. Ladle the mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve.
4. Mull it over To keep the wine warm throughout the day, without the worry of bringing it to a boil and losing the alcohol, put everything into a slow cooker. Slow cook for 3-4 hrs on medium, then turn to low
