In my house, nothing says love (or sorry for that matter!) like a bottle of bubbles appearing in the fridge. With an ever increasing variety of the sparkling stuff being made every year, there has never been a better time to pop the cork on something new and interesting. I’ve pulled together a list of my current favourite organic tipples outside of the usual suspects for the adventurous at heart, and palate.
The February wine cellar
Pinot noir frizzante
For those that like a little sweetness but not too much comes this darling of a sparkler from Biodynamic legends Meinklang. Based on the Austria/Hungary border and boasting a staggering 3,000 hectares of biodynamically certified land, their commitment to responsible agriculture and a more natural approach to winemaking is evident in every bottle they produce. This lightly sparkling bottle is formed from local varieties Zweigeltand, Blaufrankisch as well as Pinot Noir and is a refreshingly uncomplicated melody of Summer berries and a touch of cream.
Il Grillo di santa tresa
For those that want a step up from Prosecco, this number from sunny Sicily is a solid place to start. The domain of Santa Tresa was bought in 2002 by Stefano Girelli and his sister Marina who purchased it with the intention of reverting the land to its pre-chemical state and making wines hand in hand with nature. Made with 100% Grillo (the same grape used in Sicily’s famed Marsala wine) comes soft waves of citrus peel and almond, married with the slim belt of tension so often associated with vineyards situated on the volcanic soils of the mighty Mount Etna.
