Great British tomatoes

British organic tomatoes are cropping up thanks to Glinwells, a family run tomato nursery in St. Albans. Homegrown Med veg is a dream come true.

Growers Joe and Sam grow their beautiful tomatoes in rich organic soil and natural fertiliser without a jot of pesticide nonsense. They like to keep things au naturel when it comes to
protecting the plants from pests and disease with sticky traps, mini spiders and wasps. These critters aren’t the only wildlife inhabitants. Tomato plants love bees. Great news, because bees love pollinating plants which is why the greenhouses are filled with many busy hives.

And not a drop of water goes to waste (or is dumped with fertiliser residues into waterways, for that matter). It’s all collected, sanitised and recycled back into the feed. We think this is certainly the start of a beautiful friendship.

Tip top tips for your toms

  Let's salsa

Halve or slice your tomatoes. Add 1/2 a garlic glove, finely chopped and some cumin and chilli powder. Mix well so the tomato juices make a dressing. Add a glug of olive oil. Fold in some fresh mint and coriander. Serve or let it sit at room temperature for up to an hour, or in the fridge for up to a day.

  Simple toms

Slice your organic tomatoes up thinly, drizzle a little oil, sprinkle with sea salt and add a sprig of fresh thyme. Tuck in immediately.Immediately!

  Best served

Outdoors, or in a warm room that catches plenty of sun.
